Spain ride to won 1-0 scores over Portugal on Villa at World Cup

David Villa scored his fourth goal of the World Cup to fire European champions Spain defensive wall Tuesday, giving the European champions a 1-0 win and a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals at the FIFA in South Africa.

The Barcelona striker pounced his first shot blocked by Portugal goalkeeper Eduardo, but on the rebound, he coolly slotted home with his right foot.

Villa said, '' It was one of my best goals because it got us through to the next round, Keep scoring so we can keep going.''It was enough to put Spain into a last eight showdown on Saturday against the South

Americans, who crushed Japanese hopes in a dramatic 5-3 penalty shoot out earlier in the day. The goalkeeper did well to fist it away and he was in action again soon after with Villa cutting in from the left and fizzing a shot on target.

Portugal were all over the place and Villa rifled another goal-bound in the sixth minute, with Eduardo palming it to safety as he again came to the rescue. It was impressive stuff from Spain, who were playing the slick passing game they are so good at.

Portugal's record of not conceding a goal in South Africa was looking decidedly shaky and Xavi troubled them again by turning and whipping a shot over the bar from a quickly taken corner.

After weathering the early storm, Portugal finally got a look in when Tiago blasted a shot from distance, with Casillas pushing the ball in the air and then having to scramble it to safety as Almeida challenged him.

Portugal were back in the hunt in a finely poised game and they almost broke the deadlock early in the second half when Carlos Puyol got his knee in the way of a Almeida cross and it looped over Casillas' head and shaved the post.

The match started opening up but it was game over for Liverpool's Torres, who was hauled off after 58 minutes with Llorente replacing him and he almost made a spectacular entrance, heading straight at Eduardo.

Llorente seemed to spark Spain into life and seconds later Villa saw a powerful shot squirm past the post before the Barcelona striker demonstrated why he is one of the best in the business.

Another ferocious Villa drive stung the goalkeepers' palms with 13 minutes left as Spain turned up the heat before Portugal's misery was completed when Costa was given a straight red card for elbowing Joan Capdevila.

Brazil beats Chile 3-0 into last 8 reach quarterfinals world Cup

Brazil moved closer to a sixth World Cup title reach to quarterfinal clash against the Netherlands with a convincing 3-0 win over Chile in South Africa at Ellis Park on Monday 2010.

Juan, Luis Fabiano and Robinho scored a goal each Center back Juan gave his team the lead in the 34th minute with a firm header from a corner, sending the ball into the upper left corner and past the outstretched arms of Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. Robinho made sure of their quarterfinal berth with the third goal after an hour.

Brazil will face the Netherlands, who earlier saw off Slovakia 2-1, in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

This was Brazil's 47th win in 66 matches against Chile, who have only seven wins - and third in three World Cup meetings after 1962 and 1998. Robinho said, ''We are on the right road and we played well, but we still have to iron out a few minor things''.

Bravo admitted, "We have been beaten by one of the best teams in the world. We gave everything but we came up against a team that was very solid and played good football. We are good going forward but we have a fair bit of progress to make when it comes to defending.''

Chile made a bright start, but Brazil quickly got into their stride as Luis Fabiano and Gilberto Silva both forced goalkeeper Claudio Bravo into early saves.

Brazil had a loud appeal for a penalty on 27 minutes when defender Pablo Contreras took away Lucio's legs, but referee Howard Webb waved play on.

Real Madrid's Kaka, back in the side after serving a one-match ban for his red card against the Ivory Coast, picked up the first yellow card when he went for the ball, but caught Chile's Arturo Vital on the ankle on 30 minutes.

Luis Fabiano made it 2-0 four minutes later after Kaka took a pass from Robinho on the left wing and slid the ball through for the Sevilla star to draw Bravo and slot home.

Chile's Vital repaid the foul on Kaka and earned a yellow card on 47 minutes. Brazil then grabbed their third goal after Benfica's Ramires ran from the halfway line to the edge of the penalty area where he laid the ball off for Robinho to fire home on 59 minutes.

Chile refused to give up and substitute Jorge Valdivia fired over the crossbar on 67 minutes before teammate Ismael Fuentes was booked for a foul on Luis Fabiano moments later.

Ramires will miss the quarter-final with the Dutch after earning his second yellow card of the tournament for a foul on Alexis Sanchez on 71 minutes.

Brazil again was without regular starter Elano because of a right ankle injury, while defensive midfielder Felipe Melo missed with a left ankle problem.

Chile was without several regular starters, including central defenders Gary Medel and Waldo Ponce because of yellow card suspensions, while Marco Estrada missed the match after being sent off against Spain.

Argentina defeated 3-1 with Mexico at the FIFA World Cup 2010

Manchester City's Tevez and Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain, his fourth here to become the tournament's top-scorer Tevez scored twice once on a disputed goal and Higuain added another as the Albiceleste beat Mexico 3-1 move into the quarterfinals. Argentina will now meet the Germans in Cape Town on Saturday in the last eight at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa 2010.

Now we have to relax a little ahead of going up against the Germans in the quarter-finals, four years after losing to them also in the last eight, when the Germans won on penalties.

Mexico forward Javier Hernandez gave his side brief hope when he turned his marker in the 71st minute and smashed his shot past Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero, although it was too little, too late.

Argentina were not to be denied, but Tevez's first-half strike was awarded in controversial circumstances as replays showed he was off-side when world footballer of the year Lionel Messi gave him the final pass.

The Manchester City star's shot was saved by Mexican goalkeeper Oscar Perez, but Messi followed up and chipped Perez for Tevez to head home.

The Mexican defence complained bitterly that Tevez was offside, but Italian referee Roberto Rosetti allowed the 26th-minute goal to stand despite the furore caused by a replay of the incident on the stadium's giant TV screens.

Referee Roberto Rosetti of Italy awarded the goal after consulting with his linesman, the pair surrounded by angrily gesturing Mexican and Argentine players.

Then in the 33rd minute, Higuain rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 after Mexico’s Ricardo Osorio, under no pressure, played the ball straight into his path. In the 52nd Tevez blasted in one of the tournament’s best goal, an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.

The Manchester City star came off in the 69th minute to make way for Juan Veron just as Argentina's Martin Demichelis cleared off the line before Hernandez scored Mexico's consolation.

This was the fifth straight finals where Mexico have exited the competition at the round of 16 phase and the last time they reached the quarterfinals was when the hosted the event in 1986.

Argentina remain on course for their third World Cup title after 1978 and 1986. The Mexicans couldn’t, and Argentina has won all four of its matches in the tournament.

Ghana won to beat USA 2-1 nockout round at World Cup 2010

Ghana vs USA match reports:

Ghanaians were dropping all around Landon Donovan. The victors were too tired to properly celebrate Ghana's Asamoah Gyan scored three minutes into extra time to send Africa's last World Cup contender into the quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over the USA in South Africa on Saturday.

Donovan paid little attention to the scene. After some cursory congratulations, he walked dejectedly off the pitch, took off his jersey, threw a heavy parka over his bare shoulders and took a seat, alone, on the bench.

He was the picture of disappointment. And just as Donovan’s joy following his dramatic game-winner had been shared across America on Wednesday, so too was this feeling, this mood here Saturday night

Ghana become only the third African team to reach a World Cup quarterfinal, matching the achievements of Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002.
Gyan said, '' I am the happiest man in the world, In 2006 we made the second round, now we have gone a step further. We have made Ghana proud and the whole of Africa proud.''

The Black Stars, who also defeated the Americans to eliminate them from the 2006 tournament at the group phase, are the last of six African teams that began the first World Cup on African soil.

Prince Boateng gave the Africans the lead in the fifth minute but the Americans, who fought back to draw after falling behind against England on the same pitch two weeks ago, equalised in the 62nd minute via a Landon Donovan penalty.

Former US President Bill Clinton and British rock legend Mick Jagger watched as four-time African champion Ghana denied an attacking US side the decisive goal late in normal time, setting the stage for two 15-minute extra-time periods.

The wait for the game's pivotal moment lasted only three minutes. Gyan came away with the ball and met it on the bounce two strides later to blast a left-footed shot over US goalkeeper Howard for his third goal of the tournament, taking him to a share of the lead in the goal. The World Cup has always been a cruel place for sides like that.

Portugal draw to advance 0-0 with Brazil wins World Cup Group G

Portugal gone the second round to draw 0-0 with winner Brazil in the FIFA World Cup 2010 on Friday. Brazil had already secured advancement and won Group G with seven points, two more than Portugal. Ivory Coast, which beat North Korea 3-0, was third with four points.

Portugal came into the match with a comfortable goal differential to just about guarantee its spot in the round of 16 even with a loss. Dunga said to blamed Portugal’s defensive setup for the lackluster result. We played to win, but our opponent didn’t, We always tried to attack, but they only tried to take advantage of our mistakes.''

Julio Cesar said, ''Portugal came playing back, trying to use Cristiano Ronaldo on the counterattacks. It was a difficult group so it was good to finish first. Now the hard part begins and we can’t lose anymore.''

Carlos Queiroz said,'' Brazil played very strongly in the first few minutes, but after that initial period of domination Portugal slowly started to control the game. In the end, the draw was a fair result.''

All coach had good chances, but finish to capitalize at Moses Mabhida Stadium.Brazil came into the tournament as the top-ranked team, while Portugal is No. 3.

Brazilian striker Nilmar had a shot tipped against the goalpost by goalkeeper Eduardo in the 30th minute, and Luis Fabiano’s close-range header just missed wide in the 39th. Portugal had a goal denied by keeper Julio Cesar in the 60th, when he barely tipped wide a shot by Raul Meireles after a dangerous run by Ronaldo.

Both teams had dominating wins in the previous match, with Brazil beating Ivory Coast 3-1 and Portugal routing North Korea 7-0. Portugal relying on quick counterattacks and the skills of Ronaldo. Mexican referee Benito Archundia showed seven yellow card four to Portugal in the first half.

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar made an incredible save on the shot by Meireles after a dangerous run from Ronaldo, who beat three defenders on the right before Lucio touched the ball across the area and into Meireles’ path.

Both teams played without their top playmakers and it probably made a difference. Brazil couldn’t count on Kaka because of a late red card in the match against Ivory Coast, while Portugal was without Brazil-born Deco for the second straight match because of a right hip injury.

The Brazilians also played without starting midfielder Elano because of a right ankle injury sustained in the second half against the Ivorians, and coach Dunga left Robinho out of starting lineup to rest and Kaka Red Card suspent.

Argentina through frying to beat 2-0 won with Greece FIFA 2010

Argentina Demichelis and Palermo struck a late goal to beat for a 2-0 at the World Cup win over Greece top spot in the two-time world champions first place in Group B in South Africa on Tuesday 2010.
Argentina coach Diego Maradona said, ''We are doing our duty. We are defending the Argentine jersey, Mexico is not going to be easy, a very difficult opponent. But we are calm and we are going to receive Mexico with all the respect Mexico deserves.''

Demichelis scored from short range in the 77th minute after his header bounced off teammate Diego Milito and back into his path. Palermo doubled the score in the 89th from a rebound after Greece goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas saved a shot by Lionel Messi.

World Footballer of the Year Lionel Messi captained the two-time champions in the absence of midfielder Javier Mascherano as coach Diego Maradona made seven changes from the side that triumphed 4-1 against South Korea.

The South Americans gave a first start at the tournament to striker Diego Milito, whose two goals against Bayern Munich last month brought Inter Milan their first Champions League title in 45 years.

Argentina thrashed Greece 4-0 in the World Cup 16 years ago with Maradona among the scorers.

These close shaves were the signal for sustained pressure from the South Americans, whose goalkeeper Sergio Romero was a virtual spectator at chilly Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Greece finally showed some attacking intent when a superb lobbed pass from captain Giorgos Karagounis was just too long for Glasgow Celtic striker Giorgos Samaras to reach.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Argentina continually pressing only to be denied by a series of Tzorvas saves until Demichelis abandoned his defensive duties and turned scorer. Argentina will play Mexico in the round of 16 on Sunday, while Greece has been eliminated.

England vs Slovenia

England won the match advance to beat 1-0 Slovenia pays off

England appeared finally took off at the third attempt as Fabio Capello's advancing to the tournament’s second round with a 1-0 win over Slovenia to secure runners-up spot in Group C on Wednesday in South Africa 2010.

England coach Fabio Capello said,'' this team, this spirit, played together and tried together. I am really happy because I found the team I know. We now go forward. We can play against all the teams because the mind is now free.''

The victory gave England second place in Group C behind the United States, which beat Algeria 1-0. Slovenia entered the day the surprise leader in the group but finished with four points to five for the U.S. and England. The U.S. earned first place based on tiebreakers.

England started brightly, their passing sharp and accurate, but it was Slovenia who had the first shot on target when Valter Birsa tested David James in the fifth minute. Wayne Rooney raised the temperature just after when he raced onto a superb through ball and Slovenia's defence had their work cut out to stop Steven Gerrard heading in his cross to the far post.

Capello had called for John Terry to put up a "big performance" after his failed mutiny and the Chelsea defender responded, making a fine robust intervention to rob Robert Ljubijankic of the ball beside James's near post.

England then took the lead with a superb high ball from James Milner, who started in place of Aaron Lennon, on the right wing into the box for Defoe to volley past Slovenia keeper Samir Handanovic.

It took a succession of fine saves from Handanovic to prevent England from doubling their lead as the Slovenia keeper kept out shots from Defoe and Gerrard.

Seconds after the restart Defoe could and should have got his second, but his goalmouth effort after great work by Rooney on the left, went wide. He then had a goal disallowed for offside as England maintained their high tempo pace.

Slovenia though gave them a scare in the 67th minute when Terry, Johnson and James combined to deny a trio of quickfire shots from Milivoje Novakovic, substitute Ziatko Dedic and Valter Birsa.

Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole made his 2010 World Cup debut, coming on for Rooney, with Defoe later making way for Heskey. But they held on, with Capello raising his hands in the air in delight, and no doubt relief when the final whistle blew.

South Africa won the match 2-1 France at World Cup 2010

South Africa won the match 2-1 but crashing out of the competition on goal diference next round to strutting into the stadium dancing and singing, Bafana Bafana turned its final game at the World Cup into a rollicking party for all of South Africa 2010 on Tuesday Group A.It means the Bafana Bafana are the first host nation to be knocked out in the first round of a World Cup despite finishing.

France coach Raymond Domenech saw his six year reign come to an end and admitted he wished France had played with as much spirit in their first two matches after a campaign marred by in-fighting and the players going on strike over the expulsion of Nicolas Anelka.

"They showed real heart, real fight, real generosity of spirit out there today," said Domenech, who appeared to get involved in a verbal altercation with opposite number Carlos Alberto Parreira at the final whistle.

Roared on by a passionate crowd, South Africa took the lead on 20 minutes when  Khumalo rose highest to head in a corner from the left swung in by  Tshabalala, sparking scenes of joy among the yellow-clad fans.

The contest was given a dramatic twist midway through the first half when Yoann Gourcuff was sent off for using his elbow against MacBeth Sibaya with beleaguered French coach Raymond Domenech burying his face in his hands.

And the Bafana Bafana doubled their lead on 37 minutes when Katlego Mphela poked the ball past Hugo Lloris after France failed to clear.

France threw on Florent Malouda for Andre Pierre Gignac at the start of the second half but the momentum was with South Africa, with Steven Pienaar directing play from midfield and Tshabalala terrorising the French defence.Early in the second half Mphela went desperately close to extending South Africa's lead after a pass from Tshabalala but it hit the woodwork with the goalkeeper beaten.

Mphela, who looked increasingly dangerous, then forced Lloris into a save from the edge of the box as the atmosphere in the stadium reached fever pitch and South Africa seemed certain to add to their tally amid intense pressure.

But France shocked the crowd when Malouda scored with 70 minutes on the clock, making Bafana Bafana's task almost impossible and the French were able to take the sting out of the game despite being a man down.

In a desperate last push Tshabalala went close but South Africa's World Cup dreams were snuffed out. South Africa’s attacking style brought the crowd at Free State Stadium to life, and the home fans roared with each Bafana Bafana foray into the French half.

Portugal remove the match North Korea 7-0 rout at World Cup

Portugal poach with a dominating 7-0 won removing the Asian team from the competition over North Korea at the World Cup in Group G 2010 on Monday.

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz said,'' It was a great day for Portugal and Portuguese football,'' The players are really happy with the way they played, the attitude for the game, the beautiful football, the beautiful goals.'' The win moves Portugal into second place in Group G with four points, two behind Brazil. The Ivory Coast has one point, and North Korea is out of the tournament after two straight losses.

North Korea have lost both their games and will head home after their last match against the Africans.

A Raul Meireles strike put Portugal in front with the Porto midfielder pouncing in the 29th minute. But it wasn't all one-way traffic, with North Korea creating their own chances as they powered forward on the counter-attack.

The game changed though with three quick second-half goals from Simao, Hugo Almeida and Tiago that left North Korea shellshocked before substitute Liedson banged in the fifth. Captain Cristiano Ronaldo got the sixth, ending his two-year international goal drought, before Tiago made it seven.

As they game went on, Portugal became more aggressive and after we conceded the first goal, the desire and wish to equalise led to my team's collapse. Ronaldo signalled his intentions by unleashing a long-range strike on two minutes that goalkeeper Ri Myong-Guk did well to collect. Ricardo Carvalho also had an early chance, rattling the post with a header, as Portugal set about their task with vigour. The opportunities were coming thick and fast as Portugal used wingers Simao on the right and Ronaldo on the left effectively.

North Korea finally got a shot at goal on 10 minutes with defender Cha Jong-Hyok whipping a 30 yard piledriver just past the upright.

The Cholima were certainly not intimidated and could have taken a shock lead when captain Hong Yong-Jo's shot was parried by Eduardo, only for Mun In-Guk to head the rebound over the bar.

The Portuguese came out after the break pushing hard for the second goal which inevitably came on 53 minutes with Meireles slicing open the Korean defence with a pass to Athletic Madrid's Simao who slotted the ball past Ri.

North Korea were in disarray and let their guard down again three minutes later when Fabio Coentrao beat his man on the left and sent a lovely cross to Hugo Almeida who made no mistake with a powerful header.

Portugal were rampant and the fourth goal came soon after when Ronaldo picked out Tiago in the box and he clinically side-footed home before Liedson volleyed in the fifth with nine minutes left. Ronaldo made the most of a lucky bobble to get the sixth in the 87th minute before Tiago rubbed salt in the Korean wounds with a late deft header.

Champion Italy held to draw 1-1 against New Zealand World Cup

New Zealand achieved their greatest footballing result with a stunning 1-1 defending champions Italy draw couldn’t be more opposite tie on Sunday World Cup Group F match in South Africa 2010.

Defending champion Italy had to rally to get the draw in the latest World Cup stunner. With two successive ties, the 78th-ranked All Whites are in position to advance to the second round if they can beat Paraguay on Thursday. The Italians also would move on from Group F if they beat Slovakia.

New Zealand took the lead after only seven minutes when Italy’s 36 year-old captain Fabio Cannavaro made a horrendous error, handing a goal to Shane Smeltz. A long free kick from Simon Elliott sailed deep into Italy’s area, off Cannavaro’s hip as he fell and directly toward the waiting Smeltz for the tap-in.

Riccardo Montolivo hit the goalpost for Italy in the 27th, then Iaquinta equalized two minutes later with a penalty kick. Tommy Smith was given a yellow card for tugging down Daniele De Rossi inside the area on a corner kick.

The Italians laid siege to the All Whites' goal for most of the second half but a combination of resolute Kiwi defence, brave goalkeeping by Mark Paston and errant passes condemned the reigning champions to their second consecutive draw of the tournament. As much as the four-time champions dominated possession they could not come up with the winner and the Kiwis came close to pulling off an unbelievable victory when substitute Chris Wood fired centimetres wide with seven minutes left.

But the All Whites kept their structure and composure repelling continual waves of Azzurri attacks, with skipper and defensive rock Ryan Nelsen outstanding and Paston pulling off some critical saves. Long after the game ended, New Zealand fans remained inside the stadium, moving down to the lower level to continue celebrating, waving flags and blowing on vuvuzelas as the All Whites reserves played a training match.

Coach Marcello Lippi could make no excuses despite missing his top two players: goalkeeper  Buffon and midfielder Andrea Pirlo  both injured

Paraguay big win to beats 2-0 with Slovakia FIFA World Cup 2010

Paraguay strike Enrique Vera and Cristian Riveros  took a big step toward the round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Slovakia on Sunday World Cup 2010 in South Africa

Playing with a three-man front line spearheaded by Roque Santa Cruz, Paraguay controlled the tempo from the start at Free State Stadium. Vera broke through for La Albirroja in the 27th when forward Lucas Barrios slipped a pass into the box and Vera angled it past Slovakia goalkeeper Jan Mucha with a one-time shot.

It is Slovakia's first appearance in the finals and they are heading for an early exit. The team's only effort of note came in stoppage time when substitute Filip Holosko's shot was turned over the bar by goalkeeper Justo Villar.

Paraguay dictated the pace from the start and Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz, who returned after a minor injury, came close to scoring twice. He almost gave his side the lead in the third minute, his effort turned away at the post by Everton-bound goalkeeper Jan Mucha.

Then Nelson Valdez turned quickly but saw his effort go wide before play switched back down the other end.  Hamsik played the ball out to Jan Durica but he sent his shot over the bar.

Paraguay were having the majority of possession and Paulo Da Silva was only inches away from making contact at the back post following a free-kick by Claudio Morel. Cristian Riveros then drilled a shot from the edge of the area but Mucha was equal to it before Lucas Barrios was off target from an acute angle. Slovakia again found themselves on the back foot in the 24th minute but Valdez fired wide.

Slovakia hit back and Salata headed over the bar from inside the area in the 37th minute. It proved brief respite, however, with Santa Cruz almost adding a second a minute later only for Mucha to boot the ball clear. Slovakia tried to step up the tempo at the start of the second half but Paraguay looked well in control.

Vera should have scored his second goal of the game in the 72nd minute following a swift counter attack. However, he steered a header wide in front of the posts following a cross and some good skill from Santa Cruz, who was unhappy at some of his treatment from Liverpool's Martin Skrtel.

Paraguay extended their advantage in the 85th minute when Silva played the ball into Riveros and he curled a shot into the corner.Martina said, ''This is a result that will put us in a good position, but the result of the next game will decide, this is a very significant win for us, of course.''

Denmark stay to alive and Cameroon knocked out from World Cup

Denmark stay to live and Cameroon became the first team to be knocked out after a 2-1 from the World Cup 2010 in South Africa on Saturday.

The Indomitable Lions, the country that first alerted the world to the improvement in African soccer when they qualified for their first finals in Spain in 1982 and reached the quarter-finals in 1990, are out after this defeat followed their opening 1-0 loss to Japan on Monday.

Cameroon scored first when Samuel Eto'o coolly shot into the corner of the net after 10 minutes, but Arsenal's Bendtner struck back for the Danes, converting a cross in the 33rd minute.

Dennis Rommedahl gave Denmark the lead, curling a neat finish around Cameroon 'keeper Hamidou on 61 minutes. On seven minutes, Rommedahl had a great chance to open the scoring as Christian Poulsen played him in behind the defence, despite a hint of offside, but the Ajax star blazed his shot high and wide.

Three minutes later, though, Poulsen was at fault when he played a blind pass that Pierre Webo intercepted before crossing for Eto'o, restored to a central striking role, to blast home.

Former Chelsea winger Gronkjaer had two chances in quick succession but his curler from distance was deflected behind and then he fluffed a far-post header from the resulting corner.

Denmark were starting to exert control and Cameroon goalkeeper Hamidou  had to be alert to dash out and block at the feet of Tomasson. And they got the equaliser they deserved on 33 minutes as Rommedahl got behind Benoit Ekotto to latch onto Daniel Agger's long crossfield ball before crossing for Bendtner to slide home.

Cameroon though, maintained their shape, their resolve and their heads and with Emana and Eto’o at the heart of most of their raids, increasingly forced the Danes on to the back foot.

Ghana held to draw ahead 1-1 with Australia World Cup 2010

Ghana held to draw ahead 1-1 with Australia at the top of World Cup the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday. The Ghanaians moved a point above Germany and Serbia after fighting off a determined bid by the Australians, who lost striker Harry Kewell to a red card in a sensational first-half penalty incident.

The Australians, trying to rebuild their World Cup campaign after a shattering 4-0 first-up loss to Germany, now have the tough task of trying to beat Serbia on Wednesday and hope Germany are beaten by Ghana to reach the knockout round.

Australia, which lost Harry Kewell to a straight red card in the 24th minute, took the lead in the 11th. Forward Brett Holman slotted in a rebound after Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson had saved a free kick from Mark Bresciano.

Kewell was red carded for handling on the line of Gyan's fierce goal-bound shot - the ball hitting his upper arm. Italian referee Roberto Rosetti immediately pulled out the red card as Kewell and his Australian teammates remonstrated his decision.

Gyan sent Mark Schwarzer the wrong way with his penalty attempt to level the game and leave Australia to play a man down for the remainder of the match.

Australia got a lucky break early on when attacking midfielder Brett Holman, replacing the suspended Cahill, scored off Mark Bresciano's free kick in the 11th minute.Bresciano's free kick cleared Ghana's defensive wall and the ball bounced awkwardly off goalkeeper Richard Kingson's chest into the path of Holman, who tucked away the rebound for his third international goal.

Coach Pim Verbeek brought on Scott Chipperfield and Josh Kennedy to go up front with 20 minutes left as Australia searched for the winner. The Australians took the game to Ghana and had a glorious chance in the 72nd minute when both Luke Wilkshire and Kennedy fired their shots at Kingson with a goal beckoning.

Ghana went into the match without skipper John Mensah, who failed a late fitness test and was replaced by teenager Jonathan Mensah, while centre-back partner Isaac Vorsah was left out for Lee Addy.

Ghana captain John Mensah and fellow defender Isaac Vorsah were left out because of injuries, and coach Milovan Rajevac said that was a factor in the opening goal. ''Instead of two defenders, we had to use two young players,'' Rajevac said. We got off to a bad start, conceding a goal. After that, we started to fight.

Japan lost the match 0-1 with Netherlands Dutch fly at World Cup

Japan lost the match with Netherlands 0-1 , Dutch flying reaches to world Cup round of sixteen in a Group E when Denmark overcame Cameroon 2-1 in a night match.

Wesley Sneijder’s 53rd minute strike finally broke down Japan’s stubborn esistance, which had stifled Dutch creativity for much of the match.Robin van Persie laid the ball back and Sneijder drove in a powerful right-foot shot that Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima could only deflect into his net. However, the goal was reward for a much improved start to the second half by the unimpressive Dutch, who had been frustrated by the Japanese in a dull first period.

Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk said, "Everyone could see Japan do not have a bad team and then you have to be very patient". We can do much better but with six out of two games without conceding a goal you can't say you're not satisfied. Netherlands, who laboured to a 2-0 win over Denmark in their opening game, lead the group with six points and if Cameroon fail to beat the Danes later on Saturday the Dutch will become the first team to book a place in the second round.

Japan, who surprisingly beat Cameroon 1-0 in their opening match, had declared their intent to frustrate their opponents but they also attacked in numbers when they had the chance and will be aggrieved not to have got a goal. Japan coach Takeshi Okada said, "During the first half we were not only concentrating on the defence." We expected the Netherlands to be frustrated but defence alone was not enough. So I told our players to be very courageous and aggressive when we had the ball.

The first half was disappointing as Netherlands failed to exploit their possession and mustered only three shots with midfielder Rafael van der Vaart's late effort the only one to test Kawashima in the Japan goal. The Dutch came out firing after the break and Robin Van Persie had already wasted two chances before he seized on a loose ball in the penalty area. With the Japanese defence closing him down, Van Persie slipped the ball to Sneijder on the edge of the box and the playmaker slammed his shot into the net off the keeper.

The win set a record of 10 straight victories for the Netherlands in World Cup qualifiers and final tournament matches, including eight before the two in South Africa. It also extended the Dutch record of never losing to an Asian team. It has now won eight matches and drawn one against Asian opponents. The win put the Netherlands in first place in Group E with six points. Cameroon and Denmark are also in the group.

Algeria held toothless England to a 0-0 draw at FIFA World Cup

England is staying in draw at World Cup 2010 in South Africa underdog Algeria held to draw two disappointing 0-0 score on Friday Group C, their position under pressure to beat Slovenia in final World Cup game.

With Wayne Rooney held scoreless for the seventh straight match, England lacked its touch against an opponent fighting to avoid becoming the first nation eliminated from the World Cup. England hasn’t scored since the fourth minute of its opening match against the United States. Algeria hasn’t scored at all. After Friday’s games, Slovenia had four points to lead Group C, while England and the United States both had two. Algeria had one.

Striker Wayne Rooney showed his frustration as he trudged off the field to the jeers of disgruntled England supporters, saying to a TV camera: "It's nice to see your own fans booing you."Captain Steven Gerrard was the first to trouble the Algerians with a cross shot that 'keeper M'bohi Rais Ouheb, prefered to Faouzi Chaouchi after their 1-0 loss to Slovenia, had to jump high to collect.

Replacement 'keeper David James got into the game on 11 minutes when he punched clear a looping cross on his goal line, not entirely convincingly but good enough to avert the danger. England couldn't get going and Algeria saw penalty of the ball. It was clear that Capello, celebrating his 64th birthday, was none too pleased, angrily pacing the dugout.James was tested again when his Portsmouth teammate Nadir Belhadj whipped in a corner under the England bar, claiming it impressively this time under pressure from two Algerians.

England finally started to wake up and Gerrard got a shot on target near the half-hour mark before Frank Lampard had a great chance, collecting the ball in the box after some nice build-up play.He unleashed a left-footed drive but the keeper saved.

England team performance is so well but some missing combination is mistake otherwise they are standard team at World Cup in South Africa 2010.

Germany got to shock 0-1 from winner Serbia at World Cup

Germany got to shock from Serbia 0-1 in pulsating tie marked by a cluster of  two yellow card's Klose's off to red card sending and Podolski missing a second half time penalty on Friday at FIFA World Cup 2010.

Milan first half-time goal gave Serbia victory to throw wide open with Rodomir side joining Germany Group D and after routing Australia 4-0 in the tournament’s most impressive debut on Saturday -with 3 points.

Germany striker Klose picked up the first booking of the game and then his fatal second, from Spanish referee Alberto Undiano, in the 37th minute for a tackle on Serbia captain Dejan Stankevic. Milos Krasic sent a high ball in from the right post for Nikola Zigic, the tallest player at 2m 2cm high in the World Cup, to head down for Jovanovic to flick in past keeper Manuel Neuer.
To make matters worse for Germany, Serbia goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic stopped Lukas Podolski’s penalty kick in the 60th minute.

A goal and a man down Germany had a mountain to climb to get back into the match but they almost grabbed a first half stoppage time equaliser when Sami Khedira's shot hit the crossbar. Before he was sent packing Klose thought he had come up with his 12th World Cup goal on the half hour but the linesman's flag had already been raised for offside.

Trigger-happy Undiano dished out two bookings in the space of barely a minute to Serbian duo Branislav Ivanovic and Aleksandar Kolarov. It was two cards apiece on 21 minutes as Khedira caught Undiano's attention for felling Milos Krasic, the latter a menacing threat to Germany down the right wing.

The game's eighth booking for a handball by Vidic in the box, led to Germany being awarded a penalty on the hour.Podolski stepped up but his spot kick into the left hand corner lacked inspiration and Wigan's Stojkovic comfortably saved.Jovanovic then hit the woodwork down at the other end.

Stojkovic said,''It was a difficult game, a very important game for us, this is a great victory for all of us. We have showed we are a good team and we believe in ourselves.''

Greece got to alive win 2-1 failure Nigeria red card at World Cup

Greece first scored win to beat ten players Nigeria 2-1 in a thrilling encounter victory at a World Cup 2010 first record on Thursday. It also kept their World Cup dreams alive in a match that hinged on a first half red card for the African team.

The Greeces claimed their first World Cup win by rallying to beat 10 players Nigeria 2-1, Vassilis Torosidis poked home a loose ball in the 71st minute after a mistake from Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to make history for Greece, The Euro 2004 champions, who had lost all three matches in the 1994 finals.

Nigeria broke the deadlock on 16 minutes through midfielder Kalu Uche, who swung in a free kick from near the left corner of the penalty area that eluded everyone and crept in past a bemused Alexandros Tzorvas. But the Super Eagle hopes took a major hit when Sani Kaita was sent off on 33 minutes after kicking out at Torosidis, the Nigerian leaving the pitch in tears.

As half time approached Greece coach Otto Rehhagel threw on forward Georgios Samaras for defensive midfielder Sokratis Papastathopoulos as the Greece, renowned for their defensive minded play, seized the initiative. The pressure paid off when Salpingidis netted Greece's first ever goal in a World Cup finals after his shot deflected into the net off Nigeria's Lukman Haruna to make it 1-1 at half time.

As the second half wore on the game became stretched and in a dramatic spell Theofanis Gekas was denied by Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama before Nigeria raced upfield with Ayegbeni forcing Tzorvas into a smart save and Obasi missing a clear follow up chance

Enyeama, who won his second successive man of the match award despite the mistake on the winning goal, then made a string of saves in the second half. Joseph Yobo said, ''It looks like even if we win the next one, we are not going to qualify, so practically we are out of the tournament,''.

Despite the defeat the Super Eagles retain a mathematical changes of reaching the knockout stages.

Argentina too strong to handle victory 4-1defeat South Korea

Argentina strongly win the match beat 4-1 with against South Korea over as Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain scored a hattrick at the World Cup 2010 and Diego Maradona's are on the verge of a last 16 place at the World Cup.

Marodona said,'' I've to commend my boys for the great job they have done, the only way South Korea would have made our lives difficult would have been if we had allowed them to,'' we gave them too much ball to control to made a mistake like the match and we were never worried about them and never upset.

Messi was excellent throughout as Argentina raced into a 2-0 first half lead thanks to a header from Higuain and an own goal by Korea's Park Chu Young and ''this match was very inportant victory for us,'' Higuain said. Messi shot the ball then Monaco forward Park turned into his own net on 17 minutes before Higuain header his first goal on 33 minutes.

Lee Chung Young gave his side hope with a goal at the of the first half to make it 2-1 and Higuain made sure of the win two goals in four minutes late in the second half time. ''We played well, but there were some things we lacked in our game and we missed opportunities,''said South Korea coach Huh Jung Moo.

Jung pulled off two great saves in quick succession early in the half : first from Higuain at close quarters after a good break from Di Maria, a constant treat to the Korean defence, then Tevez after a long range shot. Higuain settled the contest after Messi beat two defenders in the box and squared for the Real forward to fire into an empty net on 76 minutes while Messi again played a hand in the fourth goal on eighty minutes to seal the victory.

When he jogged off in the eighty two minutes to loud applause from the Agrentina fans, 22 years old Higuain's  reply  in kind could well have been by midfield Messi who created his goals and Messi is the strongly best player of all Argentina team and this World Cup 2010.

Uruguay win the match 3-0 with South Africa lost red card 2010

South Africa slumped to a 3-0 to Uruguay's Diego Forlan blasted a stunning 25 metre goal in the 24th minute and added a penalty kick as the two time world champions defeat host nation Wednesday in a World Cup 2010 match.

If he is found to have contravened regulations then the most likely punishment would be a touchline ban for South Africa’s final Group A match against France next week, meaning he would be forbidden from taking his usual place in the dugout.

Despite his comments, Parreira must have known deep down that it was the dismal performance of his own team, and not Busacca, that was the primary cause of Wednesday’s miserable result. After Diego Forlan’s deflected strike gave Uruguay the first score midway through the first half, the host nation seemed to lose hope.Atletico Madrid star Forlan opened the scoring by slamming a right footed shot from well outside the penalty area which tucked under the crossbar, leaving South African goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune helpless.

South Africa now must win its final match against 2006 finalist France and must hope for other results to go its way to stand any chance of reaching the final 16.

Bafana had hoped to provide a brighter bit of history for South Africans to remember on June 16, but the disappointing defeat delivered a major blow to the team's bid to avoid being the first host ousted in the first round. With the tournament only six days old, the host’s on field problems are certain to see interest in the event dwindle further, with attendances already far below predicted levels.

Italy out of win held to draw 1-1 with Paraguay World Cup 2010

Italy went to World Cup at 2010 out of win to draw 1-1 with Paraguay opening the match  second half time equaliser by Daniele De Rossi after the South Americans had looked like pulling off a shock victory in their World Cup.

Alcaraz thumped in a header after 39 minutes after the World champions had begun their defence with a desperately flat Group F display in the pouring Cape Town rain. The Italians were slightly better in the second half, levelling after another goalkeeping blunder in the 63rd minute, but did precious little to change the pessimistic view of their fans and media who sent them to South Africa with a verdict of no chance.

Paraguay had beaten Brazil and Argentina in qualifying so had no need to be in fear of the holders but their dire World Cup record where they have not got past the second round in seven attempts, going out in the group stage four times, was always there in the background.

Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi equalized from close range in the 63rd after a miscue by goalkeeper Justo Villar.Already without injured midfielder Andrea Pirlo, Italy’s fortunes took another hit when it lost perhaps
its most valuable player, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, after the first half. The 32 year old Buffon was removed due to a back injury, replaced by inexperienced backup Federico Marchetti.De Rossi made up for the opening goal, sliding in toredirect a corner kick from Simone Pepe. It was asolid start for the midfielder who was suspended for four games during Italy’s victorious 2006 run afterbloodying the face of U.S. forward Brian McBride with a sharp elbow. After a day of often intense rain, the match kicked off under a drizzle, leaving the field slippery. Temperatures stood at 46 degrees, but the swirlingwinds coming off the ocean made it feel colder.

Little was forthcoming but they levelled when Justo Villar flapped and missed a Simone Pepe corner and De Rossi stuck out a foot to steer the ball into the empty net from close range. Either side of the equaliser Paraguay could have had a second as Enrique Vera and substitute Jonathan Santana shot wide when well placed. Italy roused themselves in the last 10 minutes in search of a winner but stout defending saw Paraguay hold on for deserved point.

After De Rossi’s equalizer, Italy’s best chance for victory came in the 83rd with a long shot from Montolivo that Villar did well to push wide. Also showing off swift passing skills, Montolivo was an able substitute for Pirlo, who could be back as soon as the next match against New Zealand. With Pirlo clearly recovering, the bigger worry for Italy is Buffon’s status.

Japan win to beat a lacklustre Cameron 1-0 at World Cup 2010

Japan win to beat a lacklustre Cameroon 1-0 in the buildup to the tournament, The Japanese required first World Cup victory the foreign soil Monday when Keisuke Honda scored in the first half time in Group E of the World Cup 2010.

The Blue Samurai, struggling for goals in the run up to the tournament, took the lead in the 39th minute and held on for the remainder of the match despite increasing pressure from the African side in the second half.
Honda said, "I found a good position and the ball was very good, I just told myself to be calm to make it because recently we have missed good chances. So I wanted to make it absolute today."

Despite an attack led by Samuel Eto’o, Cameroon never really challenged Japan keeper Eiji Kawashima. The Africans struggled to possess the ball and generate any rhythm up front, and even when they put a few passes together, the buildup usually was wasted by poor crosses.

Cameroon coach Le Guen said, "We were too nervous in the first half. We lost many, many balls because we were nervous and that is why I am disappointed tonight, they were not playing to their best of their ability and we were not able to release our potential this evening, and that is really disappointing."

Japan came close to doubling their lead as time ran out, with substitute Shinji Okazaki,on for Matsui, hitting the post after a fierce shot by captain Makito Hasebe  was parried by Souleymanou. Earlier in cool conditions at the high attitude Free State stadium the crowd whipped up a lively atmosphere despite banks of empty white seats.Japan's goal came moments after Cameroon hit the first shot of the game on target, with Enoh hitting the ball straight at Kawashima.

Defender Stephane Mbia nearly tied it for Cameroon in the 87th minute, but his long drive hit the left post. Japan next face group favourites the Netherlands on Saturday after the Dutch earlier beat Denmark 2-0 in Johannesburg to take an early lead in Group E at World Cup 2010.

Germany four stars beats 10-players Australia 4-0 win at 2010

Germany scored Podolski and Klose silenced their critics in style by hitting three-time champion beat Australia  4-0 win at World Cup 2010 on Sunday. Between them Klose the top scorer at the last World Cup and Podolski voted the best young player at Germany 2006, scored just five goals in last seasons German league.

Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose scored in the first 30 minutes as Australia coach Pim Verbeek’s defensive tactics backfired, and Thomas Mueller and Cacau added the others against an overwhelmed Australian defense.

Klose goal was his 11th at World Cup finals and he is the only player in South Africa who can realistically overtake Ronaldo's record of  15 goals in all finals. The strike drew him level with Juergen Klinsmann as Germany’s second most prolific World Cup marksman. Gerd Mueller tops the list with 14 goals.

As an attacking midfielder Podolski has played consistently well for Germany since the last Wodrld Cup and has made the national side's left wing berth his own, while Loew's faith in Klose was repaid with interest.

Australia goalkeeper Schwarzer could only get a glove to Podolski's fierce shot on eight minutes which flew into the back of the net to claim his 39th goal on his 74th appearance. There had been calls in the German press to drop Nayern Munich's Klose, 32, as Germany's lone striker, but the veteran's 26th minute header ended the debate.

He missed an absolute sitter just moments before when Podolski, 25, set him right in front of goal, but he overstretched and howled in rage at missing his shot, but made no mistake seconds late. It was Klose's first goal in the white shirt of Germany since hitting the winner in Moscow last October which booked his side's World Cup berth and was his 49th goal in his 97th appearance for his country.

Klose could easily have scored more as he was denied by Schwarzer from close range before he was replaced by Cacau, who along with Thomas Mueller completed the rout. Germany has not lost an opening match in the World Cup since a 2-1 defeat in 1982 against Algeria and the team never looked like losing on a warm evening in Durban.

Algeria goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi lost koren seals historic win

Captain Koren snatched the soft late goal of a 1-0 that gave Slovenia victory over 10 players on Sunday in Group C of 2010.Chaouchi could not control his emotions after the game. After striding through the interview zone without pausing to speak to squirt through his arms into the bottom left hand corner of his net the ball.

It was the first World Cup win for the East Europeans after three losses in their only previous appearance eight years ago and will offer hope ahead of tougher assignments against the United States and England .The goal came in the 79th minute. Algeria had been reduced to 10 men when substitute Abdelkader Ghezzal was sent off, was trying to hang on for a draw. But the game’s only goal appeared to have more to do with the ball than the 11 vs 10 situation.

The first half had offered little in terms of excitement  as warm, clear conditions greeted the outsiders in a mini league expected to be dominated by 1966champions England and the United States, who drew 1-1 in Rustenburg the previous night.

A free kick in front of goal and outside the penalty area offered the North Africans the first chance and goalkeeper Samir Handanovic did well to tip over a Nadir Belhadj shot. Chaouchi and Portsmouth midfielder Belhadj were fortunate starters for the 'Desert Foxes' as bans stemming from 2010 African Nations Cup red cards were dropped only this week by the African Football Confederation.

Chaouchi came to the rescue as half time approached  acrobatically tipping over a dipping Valter shot as Slovenia moved up a couple of gears and also forced a couple of corners. Half way through the half and the game remained goalless although Italy based Ghezzal was making an impact, getting on the end.

Slovenia captain Koren into celebration mode scoring the winner World Cup 2010 encounter against Algeria.

South Korea won World Cup match 2-0 over lackluster Greece

South Korea registered the first 2-0 win lackluster Greece World Cup 2010 to give them a live chance of achieving  their ambition of a last 16 berth. Lee Jung-soo tapped in unmarked to open the scoring in the seventh minute Park Ji-sung doubled the lead with a slick solo goal on12 June.

The Manchester United star reflected "This was my third world Cup goal and it makes me very honoured  but ultimately it's down t the team winning."

South Korea coach said, “If we had been a little bit calmer, we could have had an even better result, in terms of scoring goals, it could have been a little bit better for us." The Asian side grabbed this Group B fixture the scruff of the neck as early as the seventh minute when Celtic's Ki Sung Yueng's freekick from beside the left corner  flag skimmed over the heads of the Greece defence for Lee to volley in at the far post.

“You have got eighteen people in the penalty area and there is a hard hit cross, anything can happen if the defender doesn’t head away the ball properly,” Rehhagel said. Rehhagel took off captain Giorgos Karagounis at the interval but South Korea continued to dominate despite Greece’s adventurous three-man attack and Park Ji-sung made it 2-0.

Torosidis gave the ball away to Park midway inside his own half. Park surged forward and beat two sliding tackles before coolly scoring with a low shot. “We shouldn’t sit on our laurels and we should attack,” Huh said. “I said at halftime that we would have more opportunities and we should take advantage.”

Greece mustered only a couple of blocked shots and appealed desperately for a late penalty when Gekas shot hit a defender. The South Korean had his arms raised but replays showed the ball hit his body. Ten minutes from time something unusual took place, Greece had a shot at goal ...but Korea's veteran keeper Jung Sung Ryong lived up to tip Theofnis Gkas's close range attempt over the bar.

Tziolis said, “I think it was a fair result. We didn’t play well, we have very few options. There’s no other option than to go all out.”

Maradona prowling sideline score one Argentina, miss many

Messi conjured a spellbinding opening to the World Cup highlighting Argentina's 1-0 win over weak Nigeria on Saturday. Fifa world best player was in irresistible form as the two time world champions dominated Nigeria, only Heinze's sixth minutes goal to show for their power.

Messi taunted mesmerising skill and virtuosity, was denied his first goal at South Africa 2010 only by the acrobatic saves of Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

Maradona prowling sideline area for the whole match, Argentina could not see the second killer goal as the uninhibited Nigerians came close several times in the second half to grabbing an equaliser. It was a rasping Messi volley tipped over the bar by Enyeama that led to the only goal in the opening minutes.
m
Argentina had numerous scoring chances , no more so than Messi's charge on goal nine minutes from time. Another occasion Tevez triggered a counter  attack from deep inside his own half in the 65th minutes set up Messi to shoot agonisingly past the post with Enyeama beaten.
Argentina's Newcastle United defensive midfielder Jonas and Nigeria midfielder Haruna picked up yellow cards in the match. Argentina have won all three of their matches with Nigeria at the World Cup after winning 2-1 at the 1994 tournament in the USA.

But Nigeria's had won at the World Cup was back 1998 when they beat Bulgaria 1-0 .

Del Bosque nothing major injure before World Cup 2010

Spain will go into the tournament at full strength, after the Liverpool hero, who underwent knee surgery in April, with a neatly taken goal in a 6-0 romp against Poland on Tuesday.

Torres, was on target in the 75th minute of the friendly international with a cool, sharp finish from a cross by Pedro after coming on as a second-half substitute. It was Torres's 24th international goal and came just 10 minutes after he replaced David Villa. Torres said, "It's almost two months since I played so I am happy to have scored".

Del Bosque coach admitted he was delighted by the return to form of the man who netted the winner in the Euro 2008 final against Germany. Bosque said, "We have finished our preparations and we can go to South Africa in good spirits". The only cloud on the horizon for Spain was a leg injury to playmaker Andres Iniesta, who will undergo a scan on Wednesday, although Del Bosque said he believed it was nothing major.

Spain qualified with a flawless record, winning all 10 matches in their European qualifying group, but coach Vicente Del Bosque feels that will count for nothing when the tournament gets under way. "We don't know, destiny is impossible to predict, "We face very high-level teams in Spain, Switzerland , Chile, Honduras must prepare itself very well." he said.

Queiroz was however given a boost after seeing defensive midfielder Pepe back in action after the Real Madrid player had been sidelined for six months with a knee injury.

Lionel Messi not the only one of world cup 2010........

Nigeria coach have warned that Messi was not the only hunter for Argentina ahead of their World Cup opener against the South American giants on 12th June. The Best Eagles will also face South Korea and Greece in Group B, but all thoughts were focused on Maradona's superstars at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg.

We respect, "Messi's the same player, like a man, hope he respects us too,"Everton striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni said of the Barcelona playmaker. We're not thinking about Messi, we're thinking about playing against Argentina, a good team. Nigeria's run-up to the World Cup has been hit by injury to Mikel Jon Obi, their star Chelsea midfielder, but coach Lars Lagerback was adamant that his team would work through the set back.

The Swede said, "Of course you want best players in Nigeria to participate in the squad, "I would love to have Mikel in the squad, had a fantastic season with Chelsea and the Super Eagles, but that's football, all teams have injuries.

It's been a long season for a lot of the players and unfortunately for Mikel, after his operation it didn't work as we hoped. Lagerback oversaw his first win as Nigeria coach on Sunday, a 3-1 win over fellow World Cup qualifiers North Korea overshadowed by a crowd stampede.

It was third friendly warm-up, Lagerback's team having also eked out goalless draw with Saudi Arabia and a 1-1 stalemate with Colombia. What the players have done in this last week is great. They've improved all the time and worked very hard, said the coach who was involved with the Swedish national team for two decades.

"In general, it was a good game. The players are working hard and performing and now we can focus on this week's game against Argentina, and we're looking forward to this."Joseph Yobo Everton defender said the result against the North Koreans was timely tonic that had left the Nigeria squad in high spirits. It was big morale booster for us. It was our last friendly game. It was also good test because we're playing South Korea and we enjoyed the game.

We needed confidence ahead of the Argentina game and scoring three goals is a good boost. Lagerback also justified the choice of their base, in the relative industrial obscurity of South Africa's leading bulk export port of Richards Bay. Nigeria are just one of a handful of teams who have spurned a chance of a high attitude base, but Lagerback said the advantages of warmth had triumphed.

The Swede said, I checked it up a year ago. We talked to a lot of specialists about it. There is a slight physiological advantage, but it's a very small thing.Much better, was the psychological advantage...........

How to satisfy Rooney performance warm-up the match

England victory that was the better team had no context in which to impress. Platinum Star alone could unearth excitement in the occasion, England 3-0 win over the Platinum Stars in their final warm-up match before the World Cup.It was little surprise to see, England toiled and trundled until superior fitness brought them two goals in the latter part of the friendly.

All the same, Fabio Capello will be relieved to see his squad come through unscathed after Rio Ferdinand's injury. The prospects for England depend on Capello's knack of getting a lavish return on restricted means. In view the unsatisfactory work of Capello and Crouch, there is in theory a possibility of Rooney being paired with Defoe. The Manchester United attacker is well equipped to operate as a target man, but Capello has never shown much enthusiasm for a system that could restrict him. It is entirely feasible that the manager's thinking is unaltered since the qualifiers, when Heskey opened up space for Rooney.

Jermain Defoe claimed a three minutes opener at the Moruleng Stadium near Rustenburg, although England then had a penalty scare as Bradley Grobler blazed over from the spot. But second-half goals by Joe Cole and Wayne Rooney made sure England remained in winning ways heading into Saturday's World Cup opener against the USA.

Capello used 21 players, making 10 changes at half-time with only Joe Cole playing the full game and the out of contract Chelsea man looks to have secured a starting role on the left of midfield against the USA.

The Liverpool player had a more advanced role as Capello tried to clarify what is expected of a partnership that has floundered in the past. All the same, it was apparent even in a lightweight game that England's balance and security will continue to be undermined until Barry'sankle injury clears. He will not be risked against the United States.

And Rooney looked in fine form after coming on at half-time, firing in a well taken volley to score his first goal and satisfy.
